top line, bottom line

　今回紹介するのは、経済ニュースに良く出てくる、"top line"と"bottom line"という言葉。

His conclusion based on these factors is that, "With top line and bottom line growth at 20%+, higher and sustainable operating margins, major new product cycle and a strong-controlled distribution system, I feel that Apple will hit the magical $200 billion market capitalization number before IBM does and IBM currently has a $50 billion+ lead in the race."【Analyst: Apple Will Be Bigger Than IBM || The Mac Observerより引用】

　ここで言う"top line"、"bottom line"とは、それぞれ「売り上げ」「利益」のことを指す。つまり、この部分は、「売り上げ・利益の両方が２０％以上の伸びを示しており…」と訳せる。

　なぜこんな表現を使うかといえば、企業が四半期ごとに発表する"income statement"（日本の会計用語で「損益計算書」と呼ばれるもの）において一番上のライン（=top line）に「売り上げ」を書き、そこからさまざまな経費を差し引いた導き出された「利益」を一番したのライン（=bottom line）に書くからである。
